What is AEO? A plain-English guide for small business
What AEO actually is
AEO is the work of making your website readable, quotable and recommendable by AI engines like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. That is the whole definition. It is not a new marketing philosophy and it is not a rebrand of SEO. It is a short list of technical and content jobs that decide whether an AI system can see your business, understand what you do, and repeat it to a customer without getting it wrong.
It helps to keep two terms straight. SEO gets a page into a ranked list a person scrolls. AEO is the work of being the answer: writing pages so the first paragraph answers the question a customer would actually ask, in language a machine can lift cleanly, plus the technical layer underneath — can the crawler get in, is there structured data telling the engine who you are, and is there a summary file it can read. Strong AEO builds on strong SEO.
Why it suddenly matters
Search used to hand people ten blue links and let them choose. An assistant does not do that. Ask it who to call for a dental emergency in your town and it gives one answer, maybe three. There is no page two. If your business is not among the sources the engine trusts, it does not come up.
Engines pick what they can read and verify. A shop with a clear, machine-readable site gets recommended ahead of a better shop the engine cannot read.
The three failures that make most sites invisible
Most small-business sites we audit fail at least one of these.
1. Blocked AI crawlers
Your site has a file called robots.txt that tells automated visitors what they may read. Plenty of sites — often through a plugin or a host default nobody chose deliberately — block GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot. If those are blocked, the engine cannot read a word of your site. Not ranked badly: absent. It is usually a one-line change, and it is the first thing we check.
2. Missing entity schema
Schema is structured data in the page code that states plainly: this is the business name, this is the address, these are the hours, this is the phone number, these are our profiles elsewhere. Humans get this from the design. Machines need it spelled out. Without it, an engine is guessing whether the plumber on your homepage is the same plumber in the Google listing and the same one in the directory. Faced with a guess, it recommends the business it is sure about.
3. Nothing quotable on the page
The pages themselves have to contain answers. Agents pull from the opening of a page. A homepage that opens with a slogan gives an engine nothing to quote. A page that opens with a direct sentence answering a real customer question gives it exactly that.

Three things you can do in the next ten minutes, no help required.
- Ask ChatGPT what it knows about your business by name and town. Note what it gets wrong, and whether it mentions you at all when you ask for a recommendation instead.
- Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt in a browser. Look for GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended next to the word Disallow. If they are there, you are invisible to those engines.
- Read the first sentence on your homepage. If it welcomes the visitor instead of answering a question, rewrite it this week.
How long does fixing it take
Usually days. Crawler access is often a same-day change. Entity schema is a piece of code written once and installed on the site. Rewriting your key pages so they open with an answer takes longer, but it is measured in weeks at the outside, and you can do the highest-value pages first.
The reason to move now is that engines build trust in sources over time. The businesses that get readable early tend to keep getting cited, because being cited is itself a signal.
Where to start
The free Signal Audit checks AI crawler access, entity schema, FAQ schema and answer-first content, scores your site out of 100, and emails you a one-page report showing what to fix first. It takes about a minute to submit. If you want it fixed after that, the quote is fixed and in writing before you commit to anything.
